SSC Stenographer Exam Syllabus

Staff Selection Commission is soon going to release the notification for SSC Stenographer exam for the recruitment of interested as well as eligible candidates across several departments in government sector. The commission has ascertained the SSC Stenographer exam syllabus and questions in the exam will be asked based on this syllabus. It is therefore essential for all the candidates to go through the SSC Stenographer exam syllabus and start their preparation following the proper track. Below are the details of exam syllabus: Below are the three main topics of syllabus on which questions will based:

  • General awareness and general intelligence
  • Reasoning
  • Comprehension and English language


In this section, questions of both verbal and non-verbal type would be asked. The abilities of candidates to deal with abstract ideas will also be tested and questions will be based on this concept.Following are the topics on which questions will be asked in this section:

  • Calendars&Clocks
  • Alphabet Series
  • Mirror Images
  • Decision Making
  • Non-Verbal Series
  • Dice and Cubes
  • Arithmetical Reasoning

General intelligence and general awareness:

In this section, the general awareness and ability of the candidate will be tested. The knowledge of candidate regarding current events will be judged and questions will be designed to test the ability of candidate for environment, its application and the society surrounding him will be judged. Following are the topics on which questions will be asked in this section:

  • Figures Classification.
  • Non-verbal series.
  • Similarities and Differences.
  • Arithmetical Reasoning
  • Spatial Orientation.
  • National as well as international current events
  • Heritage & Culture of India.
  • Relationship concepts.
  • Indian Constitution.
  • Coding and Decoding
  • History of India.
  • Spatial Visualization.
  • Geography of India.
  • Arithmetic Number Series.
  • General Politics.
  • Science & Technology.
  • Social Events related to India
  • Visual Memory.

Comprehension and English language:

In this section, the basic understanding of the candidate of vocabulary, English language, structure of sentence etc. will be tested. Questions in this section will be based on the following topics.

  • Direct/Indirect Speech.
  • Antonyms & Synonyms
  • Sentence Structure.
  • Parts of Speech.


No components will be there in the paper related to graphs/maps/statistical data/diagrams for the VH candidates who are opting for scribe and have visual disability of 40% and above.

Stenography skill test:

For the skill test, only those candidates who are able to clear the written exam with qualifying marks will be eligible.The nature of skill test will be qualifying and for different categories, qualifying marks will be ascertained by the commission. In the stenography test, for the post of Grade C stenographer, dictation will be given at the speed of 100 w.p.m, in Hindi/English for 10 minutes. For the grade D stenographer post, dictation will be given at the speed of 80 w.p.m. in Hindi/English for 10 minutes.
